Reviews
As a wedding photographer who works at this venue on a regular basis, I can definitely say you won't be disappointed if you book Milton Park for your wedding. The staff here are great to work with as they always ensure everything runs smoothly and each couple and their guests have a wonderful time. On top of this, the gardens and heritage buildings make for a great backdrops in your wedding photos. Would definitely recommend!
Sit on a bench under the trees or order the prawn tortellini, lovely experience from the gardens to the food. Perfect for a nice and quiet getaway with a partner. Some facilities can be updated as this is an old property, like individual room temp control and lighting, but staff are very helpful and friendly with everything!
No ramps for accessibility and no activities for kids other than the pool, which wasn't heated.
Great luxury escape package with room, dinner, breakfast and high tea plus 2 bottles of wine and canapes. Food was wonderful and the gardens glorious. The hydro pool and steam room was an added bonus. Very relaxing!!
There were some very good qualities about the resort, like the gardens and pool, however there were some aspects that need a lot of improvement, such as updating the rooms. We were also unaware that the gym and spa was unavailable to children under 16. My very well behaved 12 and 14yo daughters were disappointed they could not use these facilities. This cut out a large portion of the activities they could enjoy at the resort.
The rooms were comfortable but not what I would consider 5 stars by international standards. The upholstery on our chairs was ripped and stained, the carpet was musty and stained, the shutters on our windows were broken, (black out curtains would be a huge improvement,) the grout in our bathroom needed to be restored, there were no streaming services available in one of our rooms but available in the other, the water glasses had lipstick marks from a previous guest. Even with all the lamps on the room was very dim lit which meant you couldn't really read properly at night time. Also, our keycards kept malfunctioning and we had to return to reception twice to get them reset so we could enter our rooms. The beds however were clean and very comfortable, so we were at least about to sleep well at night. Hot water was strong and plentiful. We also had a beautiful view of a large fountain outside our window. Oddly, they have added blue dye to the fountain water which was very obvious!
Breakfast selection and service on the first two mornings was exceptional. There was bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, smoked salmon, yoghurt, pastries and a large selection of fruit. But on the third morning they must have been lacking wait staff or chefs in the kitchen. They kept running out of food and plates which took a while to be replenished. It took around 15 minutes for someone to take our tea and coffee order. They also said they ran out of pancake batter. How hard is it to make pancake batter?
High Tea was also disappointing compared to other high teas we have been to. The small cakes looked like Sara Lee slices you could buy at the supermarket. We didn't even finish these as they were dry and underwhelming. The sandwiches were canned tuna rather than fresh smoked salmon. There was no colour on the plates. For a 5 star resort we might expect delicious, eye-popping canapes, small fruit tarts, berry mousse, mushroom tartlets with beautiful garnishes etc. Look at a photo of the Lillianfels' high tea for reference.
Take note that there is no casual option for lunch or dinner if you are travelling with family. We had to keep driving back to Bowral centre for meals. One time we brought back sushi and kept it in our mini fridge for dinner. Otherwise, expect to pay at least $99 a head for a meal at Hordern’s Restaurant.
Bottom line: Milton Park has both excellent and subpar aspects. I did hear from another guest that dinner at Hordern’s Restaurant was fantastic, but sadly we didn't try it this time. The gardens and buildings are stunning and picturesque; however, they desperately need to refurbish the tired and dated interior, employ more staff for breakfast service during peak times and revamp the high tea menu as it is NOT a draw card. The staff were friendly, cheerful and very helpful, but they can’t solve problems that are management’s responsibility to fix. We had a relaxing time but I’m just glad we booked through the Luxury Escapes package deal as it wouldn’t have been worth it otherwise. If you’re keen to visit Milton Park, do a day trip, eat at Hordern’s Restaurant and just enjoy the magnificent gardens.
Charming, character-filled hotel.
Shabby-chic. Would benefit from refurbishing, but without losing the vibes of an elegant by-gone era. Know this before arriving, and enjoy. The staff present were exceptional, but clearly under pressure from short-staffing issues.
This has to be one of Bowral's best kept secrets. Really, really, really good restaurant. We had the six course tasting menu. Wonderful variety of lovely flavours, and absolutely magnificent presentation. We will be back!
Enjoyable escape from the city.
The hotel has a lot of character and charm, the gardens were gorgeous. Lovely breakfast and high tea,
The staff were friendly and attentive.
The rooms needed a refurb and were the only letdown.
I've been here many times over the years. One of the best kept spring gardens in Australia. Some very rare trees and fantastic history with the building, which was owned by the Hordern family.
The place is a bit tired but overall great value for money.
Not a five star experience if that's what your after, but come for the open fireplaces, the country charm, good restaurant and amazing gardens!
